Step 1
Meet the minimum requirements to join the Army. Basic requirements for joining the Army include being a U.S. citizen or resident alien, possessing a high school diploma or GED, being between the ages of 17 and 34 and being physically and emotionally fit for service. Legal infractions may or may not have an impact on the ability to serve depending on the severity of the offense.

Step 2
Explore military career fields online. The military offers a variety of career fields or MOS (military occupational specialties). The Army website details the military career fields that are available.

Step 3
Speak to a military recruiter. You can speak to an Army recruiter online through the Army’s website or at a local military recruiting station. Come armed with a list of questions about joining the Army.

Step 4
Take the ASVAB test. This test helps to determine which military career choices you are qualified for in the Army. You can take practice tests ahead of time through the recruiter or through a variety of online resources that offer an ASVAB study guide.

Step 5
Visit MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). Your recruiter will take you to MEPS to undergo a physical, choose a military job, sign your contract and be sworn in for service.

Step 6
Prepare for basic training. In the time between signing your contract and shipping out, focus on physical fitness training. Keep your recruiter updated on your status as well as any changes that could effect your enlistment including any law enforcement infractions.
