Cutting cats’ claws with pet clippers can be challenging if you have a hard-to-handle cat or one who refuses to cooperate when it is manicure time. Most cats dislike having their feet handled. Unless you have trained a cat from the time it was a kitten to enjoy the feeling of having its feet touched, cutting cats’ claws may become a chore you and your cat do not look forward to. Using pet clippers or regular nail clippers is easy when cutting cats’ claws but holding them correctly is important so the nail cuts cleanly and does not fracture into the quick. Many cats will allow themselves to be handled when it comes time for trimming nails, but if your cat refuses to cooperate and there’s not another person around to help cut the cat’s claws try the following technique.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sharp nail clippers or pet clippers
  • Long sleeve shirt, pants
  • Knee pads
  • Cat
  1. Step 1

Dress yourself in a long sleeved shirt and long pants before cutting cats’ claws. Place knee pads on yourself if necessary. Even a docile cat whose behavior ordinarily is gentle, may inadvertently scratch while being held for a manicure with pet clippers.

  2. Step 2

Catch the cat. If you have not been successful previously with cutting your cat’s claws and have to resort to this method, you most likely dreading it and your cat knows it. The best way to catch your cat is to focus your mind on anything other than cutting her nails. While thinking about watering your lawn, doing the laundry, what you will cook for dinner or any other topic, sweetly approach the cat and pick him up.

  3. Step 3

Carry kitty to a well lit room, preferably one with carpet or a soft mat on the floor where you can kneel and hold the cat between your knees.

  4. Step 4

Kneel on the floor and place the cat between your knees facing forward and lock your ankles together behind you before you cut the cat’s claws. This position creates a little ‘holding pen’ for your cat where she can’t back out of your grip.

  5. Step 5

Gently but firmly hold one of the cat’s front paws placing your thumb on the top of the foot and your other fingers underneath just at the base of the cat’s toes. Press gently until you unsheathe the claws.

  6. Step 6

Clip each claw with pet nail clippers or regular nail clippers. Hold the clipper so that the nail is cut from side to side not from top to bottom. Be very careful not to clip into the quick, the pink area at the base of the nail. If you accidentally do clip the quick and the nail bleeds, sprinkle the special styptic powder on the nail to stop the bleeding.

  7. Step 7

Cut the four nails on the cats claws before you cut the fifth nail further up her leg at the top of the paw.

  8. Step 8

Use the pet clippers or nail clippers to cut all nails on one paw and then move to the other paw and repeat. Say sweet things and make soft noises to your cat if she seems upset. If this does not calm her down, it will at least make you feel better.

  9. Step 9

After finishing all 10 claws let the cat loose so he can run away. He will probably not want anything to do with you for a while. It is best to cut cats' claws about every four weeks. If you do this regularly, your cat might settle into the routine and be less rambunctious over time.

  10. Step 10

Avoid trying to cut cats claws on their rear feet if on your own. Unless your cat is fighting or trying to launch itself out of your arms, it rarely uses the rear claws. If you must have them cut, the cat will have to be held down and it is best to have a groomer or your vet do this.

Tips & Warnings
  • This procedure works well only if you are comfortable getting on hands and knees. If it hurts you and you are unable to stay in that position the cat will know it and not trust you. In that case it is best to have help with someone else holding the cat for you.
  • Be sure pet clippers or toe nail clippers are sharp and cut easily.
  • Styptic powder is available at local pet stores.
