Step 1
Before you consider just going out and getting your hair cut, make sure the stylist you are going to understands curly hair. Your hair should be cut dry to see how your curls stack up.
-
Step 2
Shampoo your hair only two times a week rather then every day. Curly hair tends to be dry, so over shampooing it will dry it out even more. Doing this will allow your natural oils to come out. If you want to revive your hair between washes, just lightly spray it with water in a spritz bottle.
-
Step 3
To help define curls apply styling lotion to your hair when it is still damp after a shower. Ten when your hair is dry, try not to touch it to much as this can create frizz.
-
Step 4
For baby soft curls and fine hair lightly moisturize it and use products which help to define your curls. Then allow it to air dry or use a diffuser with your blow dryer to speed up the drying time. Once our hair is dry, apply a small amount of pomade onto your hands and gently smooth through your hair.
-
Step 5
For curly hair that has a medium amount of curl ranging from tight to lose, or a combination of both. Styling creams and gels are ideal for you. This type of curl needs a bit more moisturizing then the one above. You also want to look for styling products that define your curl and fight off frizz. Again let your hair air dry or use a diffuser. Once your hair is dry, smooth pomade over it. Then avoid messing with it anymore, as it will create frizz. Do not brush or comb it out either!
-
Step 6
Now for curls that are tight, like corkscrews, with the curls kinky or just very tight or coarse, you need extra hydration. Use a weekly deep conditioning treatment and allow your hair to air dry. Try not to brush or comb out our hair to often, just after showers. To help refresh your hair after you sleep or between washings, just use a moisturizing hair-dressing and work it evenly and gently through your hair. Be gentle with your hair as it is more prone to breakage.

on 10/7/2009 @eac913: Basically you're already doing the right things; not washing your hair everyday and always condition it each time you wash. Does your conditioner say it's a moisturizer? If yes, you might want to apply and leave it in for ease combing. Other tips to get your curly hair knots- and frizz-free are perhaps:
-hot oil treatment
-avoid heat styling
-skip chemical treatments
-get hair cut regularly
-style with alcohol-free products
-use anti-frizz products
-use a wide-tooth comb
Hope this helps!

on 9/30/2009 Well, I have curly hair and I pretty much don't do any of these! Guess I learned something today. I would add a final step: Don't live in South Florida! It's so humid here I only get about a month of good hair days all year! 5*
