Covering outdoor furniture when it’s not in use extends the life of the furniture and makes cleaning up before the lazy days of summer a spring breeze: just remove the cover and relax. When selecting the right covers for the patio furniture and grill, look for a good fit and durability.

Instructions

1. Look for durable UV-resistant polyester or vinyl covers. If the furniture and grill will be exposed to the elements, look for waterproof PVC covers with tight seams or piping to prevent leaks. Covers with a soft backing offer extra protection. Plastic or thin vinyl covers may only last a season or two.

2. Study the dimensions of the cover to make sure it is the right size for your furniture or grill. A too large cover will billow and blow away when the wind comes and have excess material that can collect snow and rain. Too small and the cover will be difficult to put on and take off and leave portions of the furniture or grill uncovered.

3. Choose vented covers that will prevent moisture from being trapped under the cover. Vents can also help the cover stay put during heavy winds.

4. Look for a reliable, easy to use system to secure the covers. Elastic edges are easy to use and secure. Some covers will have drawstrings to adjust the fit while others may have zippers.

5. Look for patio furniture and grill covers at the end of the season clearance sales. In many cases retailers sell patio furniture covers at discounted prices, along with last season's furniture.
