Stepping stones in the shape of leaves are a pretty addition to a garden. They can be placed in between plants or used to create a walkway to your garden. You can buy leaf shaped stepping stones in garden centers or you can make your own. They are fairly easy to make and can become a fun project.
Things You'll Need
- 2 flat pieces of wood
- Wax paper
- Cement dye
- Small trowel or putty knife
- Paint stirrer or piece of cardboard
Look for large leaves in your yard or in a park. Each leaf should be no less than 4 to 5 inches wide and 6 to 7 inches long. Do not use dried or crumpled leaves.
Mix 1 part cement with 1 part sand. Add cement dye for colored stepping stones. Cement dye is available at hardware stores and home improvement stores.
Use a piece of wood, such as plywood, which is larger than your leaf, and cover it with a sheet of wax paper.
Place your leaf facing down on the wax paper.
Use a small trowel or putty knife (the type used for spackling) to coat the leaf with cement. Start in the middle of the leaf and spread the cement toward the edges. Apply multiple thin coats, building the cement up with each layer. Apply carefully to the leaf, trying to stay even with the border of the leaf. Continue layering until the cement is about 2 inches thick. Use a paint stirrer or a piece of stiff cardboard to keep the edges even and smooth.
Allow the cement to dry and set for about one hour to an hour and a half. Slowly and carefully flip your cement over on to a second board cover with wax paper. Gently remove the leaf. The pattern from your leaf will be imprinted on your stepping stone. Allow your new stepping stone to thoroughly dry before using. Drying can take two to three days.
