Fragmentation can occur on your computer over time that results in your computer running slower than it should. Because this occurs repeatedly over time, it's a good idea to set your computer to automatically run a defrag at scheduled times. If your computer’s disk defragmenter is not set up to automatically defragment your system at a scheduled time, but you would like to set it up to do so, follow these steps:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click on the Start button and go to All Programs
    Select the Accessories folder
    Select the System Tools folder
    Click on Disk Defragmenter

  2. Step 2

When the Disk Defragmenter Options screen appears, place a check next to Run on a Schedule and click on the Modify Schedule button.

  3. Step 3

In the Modify Schedule box, select the schedule settings you want from the available drop down menus and click on OK.

  4. Step 4

Close out of the Disk Defragmenter. Your computer should then automatically run a defrag at the scheduled time you selected.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea to set your computer to automatically defrag the system once every other week or once a month, depending on how often you work on your computer.
