Step 1
First thing, always make sure your tires are properly aired up. The lower your tires are on air, the fewer miles per gallon you will get.
-
Step 2
Always change your oil about every 3,000 miles this will also help keep your miles per gallon much higher.
-
Step 3
Although I do not recommend this one, you can draft behind a 18 wheeler which has been proven to give you 50% gas mileage. This can be very dangerous and rarely should be used if at all.
-
Step 4
Finally travel at night time whenever possible. It is much cooler at this time and you will be less inclined to use the AC, which really takes a hit on the gas when on. Not to mention there will be less traffic on the interstate minimizing the slowing down and speeding up due to traffic.

on 9/24/2009 Changing oil every 3,000 miles is too short an interval and is a waste of money, instead why not follow the car manufacturers recommended interval? This can vary between 5,000 and 8,000 miles depending on city vs long range driving and diesel vs gasoline engines . I'm convinced that Jiffy Lube promotea 3,000 mile interval as a means of boosting sales. Also you don't mention avoiding rapid acceleration or heavy braking - both really eat up the gas.
