Learn to create a unique and pesonalizable craft apron for your child.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 yard of fabric of choice
  • scissors
  • 1 yard of 2 inch ribbon
  • sewing machine
  • buttons, charms, decorative accessories (optional)
  1. Step 1

First measure the distance from the left side to the right side of the child's waist add 1 inch to each side and write that number down. Next, since this is a half-apron, measure the distance from the child's waist to his/her knee add 1 inch and write this number down.
    Ex: Child's waist = 10 inches + 2 inch = 12; Child's waist to knee length = 13 inches + 1 inch = 14

  2. Step 2

Next take your fabric of choice and cut the fabric to your measurements remembering to include the 1 inch allowance. Ex: Width = 12 inches and Length = 14 inches
Lay your fabric right side (print side) up and fold over 1/4 inch and pin the two longer sides of the apron. Then fold over 1/4 inch of one side of the shorter sides and pin in place. Take your sewing machine and using a straight stitch sew a 1/4 hem along the three edges.
At the corner where the two longer sides (length) meet the shorter side (width) take your scissors and snipe across the corner, cutting off the pointed edge. Make sure not to cut the stitch. Now flip the fabric (seams) right side out and use your fingers to poke the sniped corners flat. This will give the bottom corners of your apron a slightly rounded edge.

  3. Step 3

Take your ribbon of choice and fold it in half along the un-hemmed edged of your apron. Using a top stitch, sew the ribbon along the top (un-hemmed) edge of the apron using a 1/4 seam allowance. Also continue this top stitch along the other three sides to secure the seams. Press your apron and seams flat. Leave approximately 8 to 10 inches (for a smaller child) or 12 to 14 inches (for a larger child) of ribbon on each end to tie around the waist of the child. Cut the remainder not needed.

  4. Step 4

Take the remainder of your unused fabric and cut out different pocket shapes. Lay them on your apron right sides up in any desired pattern and pin in place. Take your sewing machine and top stitch 3 edges of the pockets in place, leaving one open to place craft items in. Use decorative accessories such as buttons to personalize the apron. Tie the apron around your child's waist and watch their imaginations take off.
