How to Avoid Swine Flu While Flying

If you have holiday plans during the winter flu season that include flying in the closed quarters of an airplane, here are some things you can do to minimize your chances of contracting swine flu, regular flu or even a cold while on that airplane.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • mask
  • hand sanitizer
  • antibacterial wipes
  • antibacterial spray
  1. Step 1

The first most obvious thing you can do is wear a medical face mask at the airport and while on the airplane. However, many people do not wear these masks properly, making them ineffective. Mack sure the mask covers your nose first of all. Then press the top of the mask to form it around the bridge of your nose for a snug fit. If you are touching things with you hands and not using hand sanitizer or washing regularly, then don't touch your face mask to readjust it and fiddle with it, otherwise you are just putting the germs all over the mask.

  2. Step 2

Carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket so you can keep your hands germ free at all times. Avoid touching your face or eating unless you have recently used the sanitizer or washed your hands and you haven't touched anything else in the meantime to avoid getting the swine flu.

  3. Step 3

Bring your own food in your carry-on. This way you do not have to rely on fast food from the airport food courts, which is not healthy and doesn't help your immune system, as well as you are not aware of the workers who made and handled the food and what illnesses they may be carrying, such as the swine flu.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a small bottle of antibacterial spray or antibacterial wipes. When you get your seat on the plane, wipe your area down or mist it down with the spray. Who cares if people are looking at you, they are probably thinking they should have done the same thing.

  5. Step 5

Do not use the overhead air vents. As the air in the cabin is recycled and swine flue virus and other germs floating around in the air would just be blown right into your face. If you need to use the air, do not point if down towards your face.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cough on your cuff
  • Sneeze on your sleeve
  • Prepare your immune system for the trip by taking Vit C and Vit D on a regular basis along with your regular multivitamin (consult your doctor). Eat a healthy diet and consider taking probiotics.
  • Read up on how to avoid the swine flu naturally (see resources).
  • Don't stress! Stress weakens your immune system so make sure you don't get too frazzled and stressed out about the holidays and your travel plans. Prepare early, take time to meditate, exercise, relax, get enough sleep and whatever else helps you de-stress.
