Many colleges and universities will award students credit and/or advanced standing for work in macroeconomics done in high school if the student earns a high score on the advanced placement exam in macro economics. Taking an AP course is not a prerequisite to sitting for the AP exam. This tutorial will explain how to earn a high score on the AP macroeconomics exam even if you did not take an AP course.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Study macroeconomics.

  2. Step 2

Go to the College Board AP Central website and download a copy of the AP macroeconomics syllabus, course overview and old exams.

  3. Step 3

Compare your course of study to the AP macroeconomics syllabus.

  4. Step 4

Sign up to take the AP macroeconomics exam with your school or through the College Board.

  5. Step 5

A few weeks before the test, take a practice exam to determine your strengths and areas in which you need to concentrate your studies. Note that although the free response questions are available for free on the AP Central website, the College Board provides only limited examples of questions on the multiple choice portion of the exam. To see some multiple choice exam questions you can go to the course description pamphlet on the AP Central website (see link below), but you are advised to also get a commercial test preparation book from your library or a nearby book store for additional multiple choice questions.

  6. Step 6

The AP macroeconomics exam has a heavy emphasis on graphs. Be sure to review both how to interpret graphs and be prepared to draw graphs to support your responses in the free response section of the exam. Check the links below for a series of excellent videos reviewing the macro economic graphs you are likely to see on the AP macro economics exam.

  7. Step 7

Practice as many exams as you can and review the model answers to learn how to craft a better response.

  8. Step 8

Take the AP macroeconomics exam on the time, date and location scheduled.

  9. Step 9

Send your score to the college(s) of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • While many schools award credit and advanced standing for students earning a score of "4" or "5" on the AP macro economics exam, not all colleges and universities award credit for advanced placement exams, regardless of the score. Some schools will give advanced standing but award no credit. Check each college to determine how much credit, if any, will be awarded for students earning a high score on the AP macro economics exam.
