If you're over the age of 18 and you want to drive in Dubai, you must have a license. But before you do, there are two hurdles you'll need to clear: you may need months of drivers education and you'll need a No Objection Certificate from your employer. The No Objection Certificate was created to cut down on the number of drivers in Dubai. It basically implies that your employer doesn't object to you having a license. The payoff in getting a drivers license in Dubai is that you'll be able to see this beautiful city by car.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your driving school. As of September 2009, there are five major driving institutes in Dubai. The advantage of working with a larger school is that it has an in-house eye testing facility and typing services---both of which you'll need to obtain your license.

    • 2

Complete a driver's license application. Your driving institute will give this to you. Along with the application, you'll need four passport-sized photos, your original passport, a photocopy of the main page and the visa pages of your passport and a No Objection Certificate from your employer. You'll also need a photocopy of your employer's passport or their trade license.

    • 3

Have your documents typed in Arabic. You must submit your documents in Arabic, and they must be typewritten. Your driving institute will have a typing service you can use for this purpose.

    • 4

Get an eye test at either an optician or your driving school. The examiner will complete and stamp his part of the application.

    • 5

Obtain your temporary drivers license. The driving school you attend will take your paperwork and submit it to the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA). After that, you'll receive a temporary license, which is valid for one year and must always be carried in your training car.

    • 6

Take driving lessons. The number of lessons you need will depend on your previous experience behind the wheel. Your driving institute will be able to make a recommendation based on your skills.

    • 7

Take the tests. Driving tests in Dubai are staggered out. First, you'll take the garage and parking tests, then the signal test and, finally, the road test. You'll be required to bring two passport sized photos to both the signal and road test.

Obtain your permanent license. Once you pass the driving test, you'll take a photograph and your license will be processed and given to you the same day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drinking and driving is illegal in Dubai. They have a zero-tolerance policy, with unmarked police cars in place to enforce the law.
