Things You'll Need:
- Leather
- Utility knife
- Linen thread
- Awl
- Two needles
- Cellophane
- Water
-
Step 1
Lay the leather on a flat surface and place the knife it will be sheathing on top.
-
Step 2
Mark a line around the back of the blade (the blunt side, not the bladed edge) that is a quarter-inch from the blade. This extra space will provide room for the stitching. The line should start at the tip of the blade and continue partway up the handle, enough to properly secure the knife.
-
Step 3
Flip the knife over, across the bladed edge, and again trace around the back end with a quarter-inch of spacing.
-
Step 4
Cut the leather with the utility knife, and wrap the leather around the blade of the knife.
-
Step 5
Use the awl to punch holes through the extra leather on the back end of the blade and handle, approximately one-half inch apart. With the leather folded around the blade, you can ensure the holes line up properly.
-
Step 6
Pass the thread through the eye of each needle, and pass one needle through the top set of holes in the leather. Pull the thread until the handle is centered across its length.
-
Step 7
Pass first one needle, then the other, through the next set of holes in the leather and pull tight. Each needle should pass through each hole.
-
Step 8
Repeat for all holes, and tie off the thread at the bottom of the sheath.
-
Step 9
Wet the sheath until it is damp.
-
Step 10
Wrap the blade in cellophane to protect it, and insert it into the sheath.
-
Step 11
Press the leather around the blade, and let it sit for two days. The leather will shrink slightly as it dries.
