How to Travel With a Kayak
Kayaking is a fun water sport for people of all ages. And while most people stick close to home when kayaking, it is very simply to travel with a kayak to exotic locations. In fact, some of the most spectacular locations to kayak, such as oceans, mountain streams, and even glacier lakes, require that you travel. Here are some suggestions to make traveling with a kayak easy no matter your mode of transportation.

1
Install a kayak rack on your vehicle. The easiest way to travel with a kayak is by driving. If you have a car, or a small sports utility vehicle, a roof mount kayak rack is your best option. Most sporting goods stores will install kayak racks if you purchase the rack from them.

2
Buy a truck to carry your kayak. If you will be traveling a lot, consider a truck so you can simply place the kayak in the bed. This will save you time as well, since you won't have to secure and unsecure the kayak each time you use it.

Purchase a folding kayak if you are traveling by plane. Folding kayaks come in two to three main sections and fold up small enough to fit inside several large duffel bags. Although they take a little longer to assemble at your destination, they are just as seaworthy and reliable as a traditional kayak. When checking the kayak at the airport, be sure to say it is sporting equipment, as the baggage fees are sometimes lower than for oversized baggage.

If you are traveling by train, check the specific train's luggage requirements for sporting equipment. Most trains allow kayaks under seven feet long, which means you can take a small kayak. To travel by train with a larger kayak, you must use a folding model.
