      To begin the conversion to salt water, while the pool filter system (including the chlorine generator) is off, begin to add salt to the water. The amount of salt needed will vary. The general rule is 50 pounds of salt per 1,200 gallons of water.

      Once the salt has been, the chlorine generator has to be installed in the pool's return plumbing. A chlorine generator can be purchased at pool supply stores. Cut into the return lines and install PVC piping to run water through the chlorine generator and back to the pool's return line.

      Be sure all electrical lines are connected and all power is on. A good way to ensure this is to use an electrical extension that has room for three electrical plugs.
