How to Use Handheld GPS Units to Measure Acreage

Garmin makes GPS devices that perform quick and simple area calculations. The GPS 72/76 and the GPSMAP 76/76S can display acres, hectares, square feet, square yards and others. Calculating an area is a matter of making a few selections from the menu and walking or riding around the entire area.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garmin GPS 72/76 or GPSMAP 76/76S
  1. Step 1

    Press the Menu button twice. This will display the main menu. Highlight Tracks and press the Enter button.

  2. Step 2

    Clear the track log. Highlight Clear and press Enter. The device will prompt you to confirm that you really want to clear the track log. Indicate "Yes" by highlighting Yes and pressing Enter.

  3. Step 3

    Walk around the area you want to measure.

  4. Step 4

    Highlight Save and press Enter on the tracks page when you have finished walking the area. Highlight "Entire Log" and press Enter.

  5. Step 5

    The device will display the acreage. Acres, or "ac."
