Sometimes when making sunny side up eggs, the yolk will break when it hits the pan. Making eggs should not be frustrating, but after mastering a few tricks of the trade, you too can cook the most beautiful sunny side up eggs.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stick of butter
  • Skillet
  • Stove-top burner
  • Large eggs
  • Spatula
  • Plate
  1. Step 1

Place the wrapped stick of butter on the counter for 5 to 10 minutes, or until it is just a little soft.

  2. Step 2

Unwrap one end of the stick of butter, and holding the wrapped end, grease the skillet by rubbing the butter all over the pan.

  3. Step 3

Turn a stove top burner on high, and place the skillet on the burner.

  4. Step 4

Add a teaspoon of extra butter to the skillet after the pan's butter coating starts to sizzle.

  5. Step 5

Crack an egg by gently tapping the middle of the egg shell on the side of the skillet or on your counter top.

  6. Step 6

Hold the egg a few inches above the skillet and pull the sides of the shell apart at the crack, allowing the egg to gently plop onto the skillet. Repeat with two more eggs.

  7. Step 7

Cook the eggs without moving or touching them. When the whites of the eggs look solid and the outer layer of the yolks are solid, the eggs are ready (about 3 to 4 minutes).

  8. Step 8

Slide the spatula under the eggs and carefully place them on the plate.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a healthier option, substitute butter for a butter-substitute or olive oil. If you don't have a skillet, use a frying pan. The hotter the skillet or pan, the faster your eggs will cook through without burning. If the skillet is the right temperature, the egg whites should begin to solidify instantly, and won't spread out across the pan. It may take making a few eggs before you find the right temperature for your stove.
  • Don't heat your skillet or pan without butter or another grease on the surface. Without a substance in the skillet or pan to absorb the heat, the surface will get too hot and can damage the metal. Heated butter and grease can pop and splatter when it gets hot, so be careful.
