How to Make Hand-Tied Fleece Blankets thumbnail
Fleece blankets can be made in a wide variety of styles.

Fleece blankets are not only easy to make but provide warmth on cold days and nights. Use the blankets on your bed, as throws around the house, or give them away as gifts. These double-sided, hand-tied fleece blankets can be made with a pattern on one side and a solid on the other or two different solid colors or you can make them with the same color or pattern on both sides. The possibilities are endless.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 yards fleece fabric, 2 yards for pattern and 2 yards for solid
  • Sewing scissors
  • Tape measure
  • 5-by-5 inch square of paper

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your fleece with a measuring tape and cut a 56-by-56 inch square from each piece with your scissors. One piece for the front and one for the back. Trim off an excess fabric that might have frayed.

    • 2

Put the two squares together, one on top of the other making sure the right side of the fabric is on the outside, the way you want your finished blanket to look.

    • 3

Lay the 5-by-5 inch square of paper on one of the corners of your square of fleece. Cut out the corner on the fleece and proceed to do this with the remaining corners, making sure that you cut through both layers of the fleece.

    • 4

Take your scissors and cut strips 5 inches long by 1 inch wide. You may want to use a tape measure to ensure accuracy. Cut out strips on all four sides of your blanket

    • 5

Start tying your knots with the strips using a basic overhand knot, making sure to avoid stretching the fabric. It might be easier to tie every other strip and then flip the blanket over and finish with the remainder of the strips.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash the blanket in cold water and tumble dry on low or simply hang to dry. Avoid washing in hot water, as this will shrink your blanket.

  • This type of blanket can also be made with a single layer of fleece, following the same instructions as above.

  • For a smaller blanket for a child or infant, simply divide your fleece measurements in half, making sure that you use even numbers when making your squares of fabric.

  • This makes an excellent Girl Scout or charity donation project.

  • Monitor children when using scissors.
