1
Decide on a color scheme. Make up a list of colors you'd be delighted to wake up to. Then head to the paint store and choose paint swatches that contain colors you enjoy and that you think work well together. These paint swatches will serve as your color scheme.

2
Choose the most appealing color on your paint swatch and paint your walls in that color. To create a monochromatic palette, paint an accent wall in a tint (white added) or shade (black added) of the color you selected. For something a bit bolder, try finding a complementary color and painting your accent wall that color. Just make sure the colors are tones that you can live with. When painting, be sure to protect your trim, ceiling and floors from paint. Instead of using a tarp, use rosin paper to protect your floors as it is less slippery. Protect your ceiling lines and trim by using painter's tape.

Select furniture. If splurging on new furniture, choose a finish that is in line with your desired end result. Generally, light wood furniture with lots of curves gives a country look. The ideal finish to achieve a contemporary or modern vibe is dark wood with sleek lines. Traditional furniture is characterized by a finish in cherry wood or darker, along with intricate carvings. Finally, to create an industrial loft vibe, choose furniture with a chrome or silver finish and straight lines.

4
Shop for décor. Refer back to your paint swatches to choose your décor. Don't pick out décor in the exact color used on your wall as it will likely create a matchy-matchy look. Choose décor in the accent colors provided on the paint swatches. Use these swatches to choose bedding, area rugs, accent furniture, candles, wall art, lamp shades, throw pillows and other accessories.

5
Pull it all together. By now, your walls should be painted, and your furniture and décor should have been purchased. Pull the room together by placing furniture in the desired spots and bringing in the accessories. Dress the bed, hang art, place other décor on tabletops and shelves, and install lighting fixtures.
