With all the distractions of TV, cell phones, text messaging, emails, movies and others, it is very challenging to encourage your child to read. It is the parents responsibility to continuously find ways to encourage their children to read and learn. Here are some ways to encourage your child to read:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step to encourage your child to be a reader should be to find out his or her natural inclination and then build upon it. For example, if your child loves to watch SpongeBob Squarepants, buy him or her the books related to the character. You will notice that your child's eyes will wide open with excitement to see that book. He or she will read each page of the book with a great interest.

  2. Step 2

Children learn by watching us. If we spend most of our time watching TV, they will end up spending most of their time doing the same. You should do your reading right in front of them. When you read in front of them, 99% of the time, they will notice and say, "Mom, what are you doing?". You should explain to the child that you are reading a very interesting book. This will certainly peek their curiosity and they will ask more questions about the "book". Be genuine and honest while you do this.

  3. Step 3

Take your kids to the library on a regular basis. Let them get the books they want.

  4. Step 4

Buy an activity book and do that activity with your child. For example, you can buy a book about cookies and then bake the cookies with your child following instructions. This exercise will give them the idea that books can be used to do creative things.

  5. Step 5

Offer incentives to your child for reading books. Incentive can be taking them to a movie, buying an ice cream. This money on incentives will be the best investment you will ever make.

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage your children but make sure you don't over do it. They may start hating reading books.
