When you work with a large file in Excel, the program sometimes creates automatic backups of the file as you work with it. These backup files often save themselves to the desktop or the default Excel file storage location. These files create icons that can be annoying and distracting. If you want to stop those icons from popping up, all you have to do turn off the auto backup feature.

        Click the "File" tab and then "Save As."

        Click the down arrow next to Tools and click "General Options."

        Un-check the "Always create backup" box to stop Excel from automatically backing up your files.
