How to Buy a Carpenter Tool Set

1. Choose a basic durable claw hammer that has a weight of at least 24 oz. This type of hammer will suffice for the majority of basic tasks and repairs around the house.

2. Choose a set of screwdrivers that includes both standard slot and Phillip heads in a variety of sizes. A 10-piece or 14-piece screwdriver set that has varying lengths of screwdrivers will handle most home-related repairs.

3. For cutting tools, choose both a hacksaw (for metal) and a wood hand saw (also known as a tradesman's saw).

4. Select a heavy-duty measuring tape, as well as a combination square (which allows you to make both 45-degree and 90-degree angles).

5. Other tools to consider include a chisel, mitre box, trimming knife, carpenter's belt and safety glasses.

6. Select a sturdy tool box for your new tool set to help keep them organized. Tool boxes come in a variety of materials and sizes.
