How to Develop the Right Brain

Developing your right brain allows you to visualize and see colors and pictures to go with the words you write and read, or the ideas that you have. The left brain deals in fact gathering, analysis and organizing information. While this is all important, being able to use your right brain to visualize how those facts are going to look once you're done analyzing and organizing the information is important, too. It allows you to see the big picture and other possibilities.

Learn to meditate. Mediation is the act of quieting your mind chatter and just existing and being. When you can do this then you will be more aware of the information your right brain is processing and showing you.

    • 2

Distract your left brain by doodling. Doodling is just the act of drawing whatever you want without analyzing what you're drawing. Making a practice of regular doodling is one way to help to engage your right brain and develop it. You may find that the solution to problems come to you when you take breaks to doodle.

    • 3

Write a short story, or a diary entry. When you're describing an experience with the written word, whether real or imagined, it is the right brain that is able to visualize what is happening. The more you write stories or write about experiences the more you will develop your right brain.

    • 4

Practice creative visualization. Creative visualization is where you actively choose a picture that you want to see in your mind. Some people use creative visualization to improve some aspect of themselves by for example seeing themselves as skinny if they want to lose weight. However, you can chose any picture you would like to visualize.

Practice free writing. Free writing is taking a piece of paper and a pencil and writing about whatever you want to. Don't worry about punctuation or capitalization, you just write. You are engaging your right brain when you do free writing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider listening to music while you work. Your right brain will tune into this and be seeing pictures in the mind associated with the music.

  • Be aware that if you normally really only engage your left brain, it will protest when you begin trying to develop your right brain. It's important to do your best to limit the mind chatter the left brain uses to try and get you to stop doing right brain activities.
