1
Remove the screen on the existing window so that you can accurately measure how big the hole will be after the window is removed. Measure the length and width in more than one location on the window to ensure the numbers are correct. Take the measurements to a home improvement center to purchase a replacement aluminum window with the proper dimensions.

2
Remove the fixed window panel by removing the screws on the bottom at each end--pulling out and down will free the window. Pry gently and remove the caulking as you go.

3
Cut the meeting rail with a reciprocating saw or remove the screws attaching it if possible. The meeting rail is the length of aluminum that separates the fixed and movable panes of glass; some are horizontal and some are vertical. The removal process is the same regardless of the orientation of the meeting rail.
-
4
Run a bead of new caulk between the existing window frame and the side of the house. This will help prevent leaks around the frame.
-
5
Run a bead of caulk around the area where the new aluminum window unit will rest. Slide the new window unit carefully into place and press it firmly to seal it.
-
6
Set a level on top of the new aluminum window unit. It is important that the window is level--opening and closing the window smoothly will depend on it. Add shims where needed to achieve a plum fit.
-
7
Drill starter holes into the inside frame of the new aluminum window unit. Screw it securely into place using galvanized screws. One screw every foot to foot and a half will secure the window unit.
