Impotence, or erectile dysfunction (ED), is when a man has problems getting or keeping an erection. Impotence can happen at any age, but it is commonly seen in men ages 65 and older. There are innumerable causes of erectile dysfunction, including circulation problems caused by poor nutrition, lack of exercise, poor diet, alcohol and cigarette use, to name a few. By employing all of the methods below, you can reverse erectile dysfunction.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Viagra
  • L-Arginine capsules
  1. Step 1

Take the prescription drug Viagra to help reverse impotence. This popular drug works by increasing blood to the penis during arousal. The recommended dosage is 50 mg, which may be taken four hours to 30 minutes prior to sexual intercourse. Consult your physician to avail of this prescription drug.

  2. Step 2

Avoid foods high in cholesterol and fat. These foods can cause plaque (fat) to accumulate in the arteries of your penis, reducing blood flow and causing impotence. Instead, consume plenty of vegetables and fruits to help flush out arterial plaque, toxins, cholesterol and other waste products.

  3. Step 3

Reduce your caffeine intake. Caffeine releases epinephrine in your blood, and one of the things this hormone does is shut off arterial blood flow to your penis. The effects of caffeine can last 10 hours or longer after you consume it. Try switching to decaffeinated coffee if you like to drink this beverage. Other caffeinated foods and drinks include teas, sodas and chocolate.

  4. Step 4

Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking. Alcohol is a nervous system depressant that inhibits your reflexes and arousal, which can affect sexual performance. Smoking cigarettes weakens your blood circulation and can cause hardening of the arteries, preventing blood to reach your penis. This can make it difficult to achieve an erection.

  5. Step 5

Take L-Arginine capsules. This amino acid helps your body create nitric oxide, a compound used to relax blood vessels. This can help you achieve an erection by allowing more blood to reach your penis during arousal. The recommended dosage is one 500 mg tablet a day, preferably with water or juice. You can purchase L-Arginine capsules at your local health food store.
