  1. Traveling With A Guitar

    • 1

Get your guitar insured. If you have a homeowner's or renter's policy, it may be covered, but insurance firms offer special coverage for instruments.

    • 2

Get a hard-shell case. A soft case or "gig bag" will not do for travel, especially if your guitar will be out of your hands. Hard-shell cases are made of wood or plastic, and they protect your instrument from structural damage.

    • 3

Put your contact information all over the case. Tie a tag onto the handle with your name and telephone number in permanent marker, and put another inside the case. Some musicians even tattoo their information on their cases using stencils and spray paint.

    • 4

Record the serial number. Before you leave, make sure you have the serial number in a safe place---you'll need it if the guitar is stolen or lost.

    • 5

Bring your guitar on board as carry-on luggage. Many airlines will allow you to do this, especially if the flight is less than full. The closer you keep your guitar to you, the better your chances of protecting it.

    • 6

Consider a "backpacker" guitar. If you're traveling only for a short time and want to practice during your trip, you may prefer to take a travel or three-quarter scale guitar. Some electric travel guitars even have built-in amplifiers.
