How to Get a Copy of Your Current W-2 for Taxes

Employers send their W-2 forms to their employees at the beginning every year so that employees can report their income on their taxes. But sometimes these forms get lost in the mail or by the employees after they get them. And in some cases, they are mistakenly not issued. Fortunately, obtaining a copy of this important tax document is not difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your employer and request a copy of your W-2 directly. The W-2 should be on file or in the database. If you work for a large corporation, contact your human resources department.

    • 2

Download your W-2 right off your company's HR website if this is possible. You may need a special access code; your HR department can supply you with this.

    • 3

Ask your employer's accounting firm for a copy of your W-2 if your employer is unable or unwilling to give you a copy. The accounting firm should also have this information in its database and can mail or email you a copy.

    • 4

Import your W-2 information directly into your tax return if possible. This is the easiest way to get your income information into your return. Many larger firms participate in programs that facilitate the electronic transfer of your W-2 information directly into your tax return program, whether you are doing it yourself or having a professional prepare it.

File your taxes using a handwritten W-2 if you cannot obtain a copy yourself. You can file an amended return later when you get a hard copy of your W-2. This can be done to get your refund sooner if you need the money now. Otherwise, it may just be easier to file an extension.
