The Palm Tungsten is a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. Although the battery pack is soldered to the connection terminals inside the device, it only takes a couple of minutes to unsolder the connections and install a new battery if you follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tungsten PDA
  • Soldering iron
  • Wire solder
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement battery
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Turn the Tungsten face down on a flat surface on a folded towel to protect it from scratches and prevent the device from sliding around.

  2. Step 2

Remove the four screws in the corners of the back cover using a small Phillips-head screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Slip a thin, flat blade screwdriver between the back and front covers, slowly prying the back cover up and off by working the flat blade around the edge.

  4. Step 4

Locate the battery pack in the upper-left corner of the Tungsten. The battery pack is off-white and attached to the PDA by two wires--one is red and the other is black.

  5. Step 5

Lift the battery pack out of its compartment.

  6. Step 6

Use the soldering iron to separate the wires from the terminals inside the battery compartment, making a note of the wire connections.

  7. Step 7

Reattach the new battery with the soldering iron and a small drop of solder to secure each of the two wires, taking care to attach the red and black wires to the same terminals as the old battery connections.

  8. Step 8

Snap the back cover on the housing and reattach with the four screws.

  9. Step 9

Turn on the Tungsten to test the operation, then charge the new battery if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy a replacement battery in advance so you can install it immediately while the back cover is already removed from the Tungsten.
  • Do not attempt to replace the battery in your Tungsten if either the device, the battery or both remain under warranty. Opening the PDA and attempting to disconnect the old battery with a soldering iron could void valuable warranty coverage. Consider hiring a repair technician to replace your battery if you have never handled a soldering iron.
