There are much fewer legit than useless lists, so here are a couple I have found to be great. Findfocusgroups.com is a great place to start. So is Surveysavvy.com. Both very legitimate, and very free, sites. Start there to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Make sure you protect yourself.
After you check those sites out, you have to protect yourself from online fraud or identity theft should someone hack you. You must set up a different bank account, email address, passwords, and Paypal account than you use for any other transaction. That way, if someone gets your information, he or she can only do so much damage.

Use many services to build up a good online income.
After you set up your online survey accounts, you must sign up for every site you think is legitimate. Those sites will never charge an upfront fee, but to make this online survey thing really pop, you have to get many listings from many websites. The surveys they send, you won't always qualify for. Or you'll be late and the quota will be filled. Also, sites test you first with low paying surveys and only send you the big ones after a while. So don't expect $50 surveys right out of the gate.

Be prepared to spend time to get paid for online surveys, especially at the beginning.
Once you've set up your accounts and lists, you must set aside time every day to do these surveys. Treat this online business as you would any business, and do a professional job. It can and will pay off, but will require, as do all work from home opportunities, a significant up front investment of time from you.
