How to Kennel Train Your Dog

Every dog should be kennel trained whether you use the kennel when your dog gets older or not. It helps with house breaking, discipline training and it is just good for your dog to have their own "room".

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A kennel that is small enough for the dog to feel cozy and safe but wide and tall enough for the dog to be able stretch out, stand up and turn around comfortably.
  1. Step 1

When kennel training, persistence is a must. When bringing home a new puppy or adult dog, it is very tempting to let them sleep with you, but if you are going to get them used to the kennel, you have to begin right away and do it every night, or time that you are away from the house.

  2. Step 2

If the puppy is house broken and you are not worried about it making a mess in the kennel, put soft blankets or towels and a few toys to make it homey. The puppy will feel comforted by it.

  3. Step 3

The puppy may cry. Sometimes the puppy will cry all night. You will need to ride it out. It will only get better. Sometimes it can take 3-5 weeks to get them completely use to staying in the kennel.

  4. Step 4

Covering the kennel with a blanket and keeping it in a dark, quiet room will definitely help sooth the puppy.

  5. Step 5

To begin getting your dog use to going into the kennel, put a little treat in there and tell your puppy to "get in the kennel" and gently help them in. It shouldn't be long before they will get in on their own and without having to put a treat in there.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have more than one dog, it is best to give them each their own kennel.
  • Once your dog is house broken and doesn't chew on things anymore when unattended, you may not need a kennel. Find a nice corner somewhere and place a dog bed down for them. It is important that they have their own space.
