Learning how to stamp letters on metal allows jewelry artists to personalize creations in a number of ways. Mastering this technique is relatively easy and fun to do. Follow the steps below to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start by deciding on a word to write on the sheet metal. Make sure that you have a piece of sheet metal that is large enough to accommodate the word or phrase you plan on using.

  2. Step 2

Next, create a guide for your word or phrase. Do this by taping a piece of masking tape onto the sheet metal below where you want the words or phrase to appear.

  3. Step 3

Now pick out the first letter of the word you wish to spell. Make sure that you are holding it so that the letter is facing the right direction. Place the stamp, letter facing down, on the sheet metal and slide it so that it touches the edge of the masking tape guide.

  4. Step 4

Making sure not to pivot or shift the stamp, hold the stamp with one hand and hammer the other end with your mallet. Hammer more than once to make a clear mark in the metal. As you are hammering, slowly move the end of the stamp being hammered from left to right and up and down.

  5. Step 5

Once the stamp has been adequately hammered, pick up the stamp from the metal and observe the impression. Pick your next letter and repeat the previous steps to imprint that letter in the metal.

  6. Step 6

Continue these steps until your complete word or phrase is printed in the metal.
