Small refrigerators are a great way to save space, whether you are using them in an office, a dorm room, or a small apartment. The problem most people run into when using them is that not only to they fill up quickly, but quite a few items are too large or awkward to fit inside them. There is hope, however. There are several ways to save space in small refrigerators that anyone can use. Below, you will find a number of them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make use of adjustable shelves. Moving the shelves around and laying sealed containers on their sides allows you to fit larger and more awkwardly sized containers into small refrigerators. Just make sure that you are able to fit items both above and below to eliminate any wasted space.

  2. Step 2

Refrigerate only what needs it. There are quite a few items that many people normally keep in the refrigerator that do not actually need to be kept there. Most fruit and many vegetables can live quite comfortably on the countertop or in a paper bag. The same is true for tortillas, dry goods, and many other nonperishable items that will only quickly fill up small refrigerators.

  3. Step 3

Purchase smaller containers and amounts. It may save money to buy food in bulk and keep an assortment of condiments and other items for use later, but if they are not something that you are going to be going through quickly, you are probably going to have to look at small containers instead in order to save space.

  4. Step 4

Do not leave leftovers. Even though it is a comforting feeling to look through the refrigerator and dig into the abundant leftovers for something quick to eat, small refrigerators simply do not have the capacity to hold large amounts of leftovers. Cook smaller amounts and leave as few leftovers as possible to leave enough room for fresh ingredients.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most items that are vinegar based, such as mustard or ketchup, can live quite happily in the pantry.
  • Sugar based items like jams and jellies also don't need to be kept in small refrigerators like high fat or otherwise quickly perishable items would. Just don't leave them out too long.
