Things You'll Need:

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • time
  1. Step 1

the first step to becoming a better basketball player is by getting into good shape. Even if you aren't technically sound when it comes to basketball, great athletes can still be very useful. You can be a great rebounder, defender, and shot blocker. Good basketball shape requires you to be fast, strong, and able to jump high. You can achieve these goals by implementing a good workout routine into your daily life. You want to build strength through basic lifts like the squat and deadlift and speed and quickness through agility drills and plyometrics.

  2. Step 2

Once you have gotten into decent shape, you want to start working on your dribbling and ball control. Be sure to practice with both hands equally to eliminate weak spots before they occur. This way you will be tougher to defend. Once you have gotten down some basic dribbling skills work on doing some practice drills where you go behind your back, between the legs, crossover, spin move, etc... You can never practice dribbling enough. Until you can do every single move at full speed with your eyes up, you haven't perfected dribbling.

  3. Step 3

Practice your shooting as well. Start in close and get your basic shots down before you start practicing three pointers. A good start is the lay up, the most basic shot in basketball. Work on being able to make this shot with both your right and left hand. When you go up for these lay ups, protect the ball and jump with your opposite leg from which hand your holding the ball in. Once you have perfected your shot from close range, try to develop a jump shot and a three point shot that is effective. When practicing shooting, never be stationary, always be moving because you want to practice like you are in a game.

  4. Step 4

work on your footwork. Get a partner and play some defense. work on keeping your shoulders square to his body and your feet moving. Always shuffle and never cross your feet. Look at his eyes, not his hands. Work on learning your opponents habits(does he go left or right, whats his favorite move?)

  5. Step 5

there are plenty of more things you can work on, but this is getting a little long so.... THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO TO BECOME BETTER IS BY PLAYING!!! The more real game experience you have the better. There is a huge difference between a real game and practice! Good luck and shoot me a question if you have one!
