When selling a car, it is important to ask yourself, "what is my car worth" before setting a price. A common mistake that car owners make is to either overprice or under price their car. Over pricing a car can make it very hard to sell, while under pricing it does not give the car owner the maximum amount of money for the car.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

As a private party, use the Kelly Blue book to determine the car's worth. This can be done online in a few short minutes.

  2. Step 2

Be sure to take an objective look as you determine what your car is worth. Do not overlook any imperfections, because a potential buyer is going to be very critical of the car. Consider these flaws when rating the condition of the car.

  3. Step 3

Keep an eye on the competition. Look through online classifieds and newspapers for similar models in your area. This will give you an idea about acceptable asking prices for your car.

  4. Step 4

Search dealers in your area for the prices on their similar car models, and make sure that your price is under theirs. A car dealer' s price can includes things that you cannot offer like warranties.

  5. Step 5

Reduce your asking price according to any necessary repairs. If your car's air conditioning system is out, you need to subtract the amount that it takes to repair the air conditioning from your asking price.

  6. Step 6

If you are not firm on an asking price, include phrases like "or best offer" when listing your car for sale. This tells potential buyers that you are willing to negotiate.
