How to Activate a Visa Check Card

Visa check cards are basically debit cards that allow you to purchase merchandise anywhere Visa credit cards are accepted. They are linked directly to your checking account, and money is deducted every time you use it at an ATM or make a purchase. First, a new Visa check card has to be activated. That process is quite simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the 1-800 toll free number on the sticker on your Visa check card. The number directs you to automated prompts and is usually only for activation purposes. The number also varies, depending on the bank that issued the Visa check card.

    • 2

Enter your 16-digit card number when prompted to by the voice prompts. Some banks may require you to press the pound key after entering the card number.

    • 3

Type in the last four digits of your Social Security number when prompted to and wait for the voice prompt to tell you the card is activated. When the card is activated, hang up.

    • 4

Remove the sticker from the card and sign the back of the card next to the three-digit code. Many stores or businesses will not accept the card if it is not signed; therefore, it is important to sign it immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the card is not activated after a period of time (time period depends on the issuer), it will be canceled to protect you from predators and identity theft.
