Bali homes are designed to be open to the elements, so it is important to choose a location carefully. Tropical locations are ideal, but the design can be accommodated to more temperate climates without sacrificing the core elements. Because large windows are one of the key elements, using double-paned glass, which allows the sun's rays to warm the house without letting out heat work well.

2
Construct the Bali house using as many windows and sliding glass doors as possible. These allow in plenty of natural light and allow nature to be the main design element. Exposed wood should also be used as much as possible in the design, giving it a softer, more natural edge. Exposed beams in the ceilings, as well as natural wood floors give the house a more natural look.

Paint the walls in a neutral color, such as white or tan. While a good deal of the design should be left in natural wood, choosing a wall color that accentuates the color will help pull together the design.

Constructing a roof out of traditional thatch may prove difficult, depending on the climate where the house is being built and the materials available. If straw is available and the climate is conducive, wrap bundles, or bottles, of straw together and pack them tightly on the rafters. Starting with the eaves, tie them tightly to the rafters, adding a second "weathered" layer over the first. Alternative roofing tiles, such as those made out of ironwood or clay, are also possibilities, as is a flat roof.

5
Create outdoor landscaping by incorporating large roof overhangs into patios. This easy transition from inside to outside will help with the flow and serenity of the Bali house. Pools, ponds and outdoor showers are all great possibilities for landscaping and provide a relaxing retreat during hot days.
