A balance bike teaches children to balance before they pedal. This is a crucial skill in learning how to ride a bike and also teaches motor skills. There are many bikes on the market, but a balance bike can be made at home with the right tools, a regular bike and a little time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove the pedals from the bike with the crescent wrench. Look for either the nut directly behind the pedal, or the hole if the pedal needs to be removed with an Allen key.

  2. Step 2

Remove the training wheels from the bike with the screwdriver or wrench, if there are any. Remove the rest of the mechanics from the bike: chain guard, cranks and bottom bracket. Use the chain tool to remove the chain.

  3. Step 3

The only parts left should be the frame, wheels, handlebars and seat. Adjust the seat and handlebars so the child can place his feet flat on the ground when he sits down.

  4. Step 4

The child should be able to move the bike by giving it a push with her feet. With practice, she will be able to glide along and balance as the bike moves.

Tips & Warnings
  • The left and right pedal may have opposite threading, according to JimLangley.net, so be aware of this. To make parts removal easier, use a liquid wrench solution like WD-40.
  • The bolt on the back wheel could potentially scratch a child's leg due to its size and lack of protective covering, according to BenParsons.com. To avoid this, use a hacksaw to cut the bolt down.
