Enhancing the sound of your motorcycle is one of many ways to make it your own, but many motorcycles ship with a silenced exhaust. Make your motorcycle sound louder and more powerful by "drilling out" the exhaust or removing the baffles.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2" metal-cutting drill bit or hole saw
  • Drill
  • Basic metric wrench set
  • Motorcycle

    Drilling Out The Exhaust

  1. Step 1

Use schematics specific to your motorcycle (which may usually be acquired by visiting your dealer) to determine where the baffles are placed in your exhaust.

  2. Step 2

Use a 1/2-inch hole saw of metal cutting drill bit to drill a hole in the side of the motorcycle's muffler, just inside of the first baffle from the exhaust outlet. Repeat on each side of the exhaust.

  3. Step 3

Turn on the motorcycle and rev the engine in neutral to listen to the sound difference. Drill more holes until the desired loudness or sound quality is achieved.

  4. Removing The Baffles

  5. Step 1

Using schematics from your dealer or exhaust manufacturer, determine the number of baffles in your muffler. Most exhaust systems will have two or three.

  6. Step 2

Use a wrench to detach the exhaust from the cylinder head, and then from any mounting brackets on the frame. Set any nuts and bolts aside.

  7. Step 3

Attach the 1/2-inch hole saw or drill bit to a hand-held drill.

  8. Step 4

Insert the end of the hole saw or bit into the exhaust outlet. Drill a hole through the first baffle. Be careful to center the bit as much as possible to avoid whistling and other sound effects.

  9. Step 5

    Drill through the remaining baffles.

  10. Step 6

Reattach the exhaust system and start the motorcycle to check for the desired sound change.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check with local ordinances to determine exactly how loud you can make the exhaust without breaking any noise laws.
  • Drilling too far into an exhaust system can cause serious power-depletion issues. Be careful not to drill past the last baffle far enough to damage the exhaust.
