How to Make Chocolate Molasses Cookies

If you remember the sweet, melt-in-your-mouth taste of grandma's soft molasses cookies, you will love this new twist on an old favorite. Invented by the author, these cookies are a holiday favorite with her family and will soon be with yours. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup butter (not margarine or spread)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2/3 cup dark molasses
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3-1/2 cups flour
  • 1 12 oz. package chocolate chips
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Instructions

      Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, cream together until smooth one cup butter, one cup white sugar, two-thirds cup dark molasses, one teaspoon vanilla extract and one large egg.

      Stir in one-half teaspoon kosher salt and one teaspoon baking soda until well blended. Add three-and-one-half cups of flour a little at a time to make a stiff dough. You may need to add a little more or a little less flour to achieve that consistency.

      Stir in one 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips and one cup of coarsely chopped walnuts. Drop rounded teaspoons of cookie dough on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for approximately 10 minutes.

      Remove immediately from the cookie sheet and allow to cool. This recipe makes approximately three-and-half dozen cookies.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use semi-sweet or milk chocolate. You can also add pecans, raisins or dates. For the holidays, decorate by drizzling a glaze made of one cup powdered sugar, whisked with two tablespoons hot water.
