How to Make Cheese Equipment

Making cheese is a delightful project that can be done with children. They will be fascinated by the process of raw milk turning into a solid, edible creation. In order to make cheese, you need cheese-making equipment. A cheese press and presser can be made from household supplies or supplies from a local hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark holes on one piece of plywood for the threaded poles. Drill the holes. Do the same with the second piece of plywood.

    • 2

Place a washer ring on the outside of one piece of plywood. Push the threaded poles through the washers and holes and add screws to the ends of the threaded poles. Do the same for the other piece of plywood.

    • 3

Set your new cheese press upright. Tighten the screws on the outside of the bottom piece of plywood.

    • 4

Place the metal pie tin on the bottom plywood platform as a drain pan. Put the large PVC ring inside it to act as a cheese mold.

    • 5

Place cheesecloth inside the large PVC ring to strain the whey, and add cheese curds. Wrap the curds in the cheesecloth and place the wooden coaster on top, followed by the smaller PVC pipe. These will help press the whey out of the curds.

    • 6

Use it by pushing the top piece of plywood down against the PVC pipe and stack heavy cans on top as weights. Tighten the screws to keep the plywood level. The next morning, take your molded cheese out of the press, salt, and eat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The size of the PVC rings can vary depending on how big a wheel of cheese you want to make, and what your hardware store carries. As long as the mold ring is bigger than the presser ring, any size will do.

  • Be careful where you drill the holes for the threaded rods. If you plan poorly, you may break the board.
