For this simple drapery pattern, all you need to know is how to machine sew a straight stitch, and how to carefully measure, mark and cut fabric. Any basic curtain rod will do, and you will sew in a rod pocket, so no extra hardware is needed. Because these drapery are lined to the edge and both sides will be visible when the curtains are tied back, consider choosing a contrasting decorative fabric for the lining.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outer fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Pins
  • Curtain rod
  • Iron
  1. Step 1

Measure your curtain rod. Multiply the length by 3 for full, ruffled curtains, by 2.5 for average gathering or by 2 or less for a more fitted look.

  2. Step 2

Divide this number by 2 for two curtain panels, and add 1 inch for the side seam allowance. This is the cut width for the fabric and lining for each curtain panel.

  3. Step 3

Measure from the curtain rod down to the level where you want the lower hems of the curtain to fall. Add 4 inches for the bottom hems and 1/2 inch for the top seam. Then add the depth needed for the rod pocket. The curtain rod should fit snugly but not too tightly within the pocket.

  4. Step 4

Cut the curtain fabric and lining fabric panels using the dimensions you have determined.

  5. Step 5

Hem each curtain and lining panel by folding the bottom edge to the wrong side by 2 inches then 2 inches again. Iron, pin and stitch along the upper folded edge.

  6. Step 6

Place the hemmed curtain fabric and lining panels together with right sides facing, matching all the edges evenly.

  7. Step 7

Measure and mark the level for the rod pocket at each side of the curtain panels. Sew 1/2-inch side seams from this mark to the lower edge of the panels and along the top of each curtain panel.

  8. Step 8

Press the side seams open with an iron, and press the raw edges at the sides of the rod pocket so they are aligned with the sewn seams.

  9. Step 9

Turn the panels right-side out, and press all the seams flat. From the right side, stitch a line across the top of each panel to form the rod pockets.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a different look, add a few inches to the curtain length and feature a heading above the rod pocket.
  • Measure and mark the seams and hems carefully. Otherwise the draperies will not look straight when they are hung.
