How to Exercise at Home or in Your Dorm Room

For many people, a hectic and busy fast-pace lifestyle is usually a reason for not exercising regularly. Finding the time to fit in a daily fitness and exercise routine can be a difficult task, especially after a stressful day at work, studying in classes or running multiple errands. Joining a gym is an option for those who don't mind exercising in public. It's easy to use these excuses to not get enough exercise, but it's so important and easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle and perform a daily exercise routine from the comforts of your home.

Play with kids. Kids are always on the move, and if you can manage to stay on the same pace as them, you will definitely break a sweat. Instead of getting annoyed at little ones, take advantage of their energy. Similarly, babysitting is a great way to exercise by playing fun and enjoyable physical games like chase, tag or hide-and-seek---and you get paid at the end of the evening.

Have a dance or aerobics party. Dancing and aerobics are a fun way to get fit with family and friends. Make it a weekly routine to encourage stronger friendship, communication and relationships.

Do strengthening exercises using your body weight; these can be done in a limited amount of space and even while watching television. Push-ups and sit-ups are easy to perform in the house or dorm.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Drink plenty of fluids during any strenuous physical exercises to replenish the body and prevent dehydration. Water, or preferably, electrolyte-enhanced water is the best type of fluid to drink. The added benefits to getting fit at home or in the dorm is the convenience and monetary savings. If you are a student, you can invite a couple of friends and have a dorm exercising party.

    • Consult your medical doctor or health care provider if you are under medical supervision or management for an existing medical condition before starting any extreme physical exercises. Be very careful not to become dehydrated if you are taking prescription medication. Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine before and during the physical work out. Do not exercise immediately after a full meal. Allow at least one hour for the food to be digested before starting any physical exercises.
