How to Build 3D Websites

If you are in the process of creating a website, you know that having a cool, sophisticated looking page with lots of bells and whistles is more likely to get visitors (and repeat visitors as well). One approach to adding that little something extra to your site is to use 3D imagery. There are several programs that you can use for this purpose, ranging from the expensive and complex to the free and relatively straightforward. For the purposes of this article, the freeware program Daz Studio will be used to render the 3D content, and Photoshop will be used to make the webpage.

Instructions

    • 1

List the things you want to have on your site before you start creating your website design, such as what kind of navigation you want to use and what graphics (3D or otherwise) you want to have. You also need to sketch out on paper where each of these items should sit on your page.

    • 2

Go to the Daz3D website and download and install the freeware version of Daz Studio. You should then go to sites like Daz3D and Renderosity and browse through the enormous number props and poseable figures they have available for sale or in their free sections and download the items you will need for your project. Install all of these items to the Daz Studio library.

    • 3

Open Daz Studio. If a default scene loads, go to "File" and click "New." Now go to the library folders on the left and browse to the content you installed. Different types of items, such as poseable figures or props are in different folders. Select a figure and load it. Then select some clothing for that figure and load it on the figure. Use the Powerpose controls on the right to pose the figure.

Click on the "Render Settings" and adjust them to your needs. Images for web sites generally don't need a resolution above 72 pixels. Click "Render" and save the result as a PNG file. This will create a transparency around the figure or prop you render. Create new documents for each image you need and render them separately.

Open Photoshop. click on "File" and select "New." In the dialog that opens select the 800 x 600 web template. Now use the "Shape" tools to create you layout and your navigation buttons. Then add any text you need. Once you have these element in place, open each of your rendered 3D images and copy and paste them into your web page design. You will have to resize and reposition them where you want them. Also, you may want to place an image layer behind another one so that you can do this like having a character looking out from behind the navigation bar.

Use the "Slice" tool to divide the page into sections, naming each. Now select "File" and click "Save for Web or Devices." Save you work as GIFs. Photoshop will also produce the HTML file for your website.
