How to Make Decorative Concrete Block Walls

Save

Concrete block is known for its sturdy, practical use in building projects. It is a cost- efficient material that is quite versatile in application. While most concrete block walls are simply built for functional and practical uses, concrete block can also be used to make a decorative wall. This inexpensive material is ideal for creating a wall on a budget.

Things You'll Need

  • Concrete blocks
  • mortar
  • concrete
  • vinyl enamel paint
  • stencil material
  • wire reinforcement

Painted Block Wall

  • Create a simple repeat design to be applied to side of the blocks. A repeat design is a design that connects to itself when it is stacked. Create the design to repeat when the blocks are staggered, rather than when placed directly on top of each other.

  • Create a stencil with the design. Create registration marks indicating the corners of the block, so the design is perfectly centered on every block.

  • Paint the blocks a base color using vinyl enamel paint. Be sure to properly prepare the bricks before applying the paint, thoroughly washing and drying the blocks. Let the base coat of paint dry completely.

  • Lay the stencil on the painted blocks and apply a contrasting color of paint on the stencil, transferring the design to the blocks. Let dry completely before building the wall.

  • Build the wall with the painted blocks. Be careful not to get mortar on the painted design, and wipe any wet mortar off the blocks before it dries. Create a footing for the wall using concrete. Stack the blocks in a staggered method, applying mortar to each the top of adjoining sides of the blocks to glue them together. Add wire reinforcement inside the blocks if necessary.

Unpainted Garden Block Wall

  • Create a footing for the wall. The footing should be the length and width of the desired wall.

  • Stack the blocks on their sides, exposing the holes, and add mortar to adhere the bricks together. Continue stacking in a staggered pattern.

  • Once the wall is completed, add small potted plants into the exposed holes. Be sure to add plants that do not need a lot of sunlight. This method is not as private, but creates a beautiful garden wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are many sizes and shapes of concrete blocks, so choose the option that is best for your needs.
  • Make sure the wall is secure and stable, and will not collapse.
