How to Make Valance
A valance is a short curtain hung at the top of a window. Hang it alone, over the top of a full drapery or above a curtain mount. The finished valance length should be about 1/5 of the height of the window or, if using draperies, 1/5 of the full window treatment height. Make the valance 1 1/2 to 2 times the window width for attractive fullness. Mount the valance on a straight curtain rod, or use one with projections to bring it out from the window. Curtain rods can be up to 1 ½ inches in diameter for a comfortable fit. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Sewing machine
- Curtain rod (1 1/2 inches in diameter or less)
Instructions
-
Determine Fabric Size
-
1
Measure the window width in inches. Multiply that number by 1.5. Add 2 to that figure for total fabric length in inches. For rods with a projection, double the number of inches the rod projects out and add that number to the total fabric length.
-
2
Measure the window or window treatment height in inches. Divide by 5. Add 4 to that number for total fabric height in inches.
-
-
3
Cut fabric to correct size.
Construction
-
4
Place the fabric face down on the ironing board. Fold the fabric up 1 inch on the left side and press with an iron. Repeat on the right side, then top and bottom.
-
5
Unfold the fabric on the left side. Place the edge on the crease and press. Fold the fabric up on the next crease, so you have a 1-inch double-folded hem, then pin in place. Repeat this on the right side and bottom, but not the top. Pin the top edge as is.
-
6
Machine stitch as close to each pinned edge as possible all the way around the fabric, removing pins as you go. Press all four edges.
-
7
Fold the top edge in 2 inches. Press. Pin in place. Machine stitch, removing pins as you go.
-
8
Insert the curtain rod through the pocket on the top of the valance, pulling fabric over until it is gathered across the rod. If the rod end is sharp, cover it in masking tape to avoid catching or tearing the fabric, then remove the tape once the curtain is on the rod. Even out the fabric distribution by pushing and pulling fabric to one end or the other.
-
9
Follow rod package directions for installation on window.

Tips & Warnings
Round up fabric size to the nearest ¼ or ½ inch for ease in cutting material. Cut the fabric straight and to square angles, using the fabric grain as a guide. When using plastic-head straight pins, avoid getting too close with the iron, as the tops will melt with heat. Use thread that matches the fabric as closely as possible. Go with a lighter shade instead of darker, if necessary.
