How to Take an IQ Test

This map shows how IQ levels vary from country to country.

An intelligence quotient test, or IQ test, measures a person's intelligence and mental potential. The questions assess your verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, memory and processing speed. Since an IQ test measures how efficiently your brain functions, you will not be able to cram for this test. Yet there are a few ways to prepare and ensure you perform at your best.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a licensed psychologist who offers IQ tests. If you want to learn your official IQ score, you will need to take a supervised test with a licensed psychologist. Call local schools to inquire who they use to administer their IQ tests. You may also contact your state's psychological association to ask for a list of psychologists who give these tests.

Take a few practice tests. Visit Mensa.org to take a brief IQ test to help you prepare for your test. (See Resources.) You can also purchase a Mensa home test to see what sort of questions you will encounter on your test.

    • 3

Do word, number and logic puzzles. Some questions on your IQ test will come in the form of a puzzle. Visit websites like PuzzleChoice.com to find free puzzles.

    • 4

Get plenty of sleep the night before your test. Eat a healthy breakfast.

    • 5

Make educated yet quick decisions. Since IQ tests are timed, you will not have a lot of time to mull over each question. If you stumble on a question, go with your first instinct and move onto the next problem.

    • 6

Stay calm. If you become stressed during your exam, take a deep breath and try to relax. You won't be able to answer the questions to your best ability if you are feeling frustrated.

Tips & Warnings

  • You cannot obtain an official IQ score from an on-line test. These tests are not timed and not supervised by a qualified administrator.
