Instructions

    • 1

Melt 1/4 cup of grated shea butter and 1 tbsp. of grated beeswax in a double boiler until they have liquefied. Shea butter comes from the nuts of the shea-karite tree, which grows in tropical regions of Africa. The oils in shea butter make it good for use, among other things, on dry skin and sunburns and to soften rough areas of the skin. It is not greasy and is absorbed quickly into the skin.

    • 2

Add 1/2 cup of avocado oil and 2 tbsp. of coconut oil to the shea butter and beeswax. Mix well. Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Avocado is often used to treat various skin conditions, especially skin plagued by rashes. Coconut oil is another oil that is especially good for dry skin and is often used in massage oils. Coconut oil can help prevent wrinkles, as well.

    • 3

Whisk in 3 tbsp. of vegetable glycerin, which is also a natural skin softener.

    • 4

Add 10 drops each of rose, calendula and chamomile oils, several drops at a time. Whisk well after each application until all the essential oils have been incorporated into the mixture.

    • 5

Pour the herbal body butter into a wide-mouthed glass jar and seal well. Store in a cool, dark place.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find the ingredients used in this herbal body butter in your local health food or herbal store.

  • Both shea butter and vegetable glycerin are sensitive to light and can begin to break down, making them ineffective. You should, therefore, make sure that they are stored in a dark place. As with any herbal remedy, first test on a small patch of skin before using.
