How to Dress Modestly & Still Be Attractive

Attraction is simply defined as having the ability to arouse pleasure or interest, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. While many may take this to mean showing some skin, that's not always considered attractive. Tony Peteresen of CSU Fresno says that men appreciate and are attracted to women who dress more modestly and that it's "rarely flattering" to show it all off and almost always causes a woman to lose respect. Confidence is a major factor in attraction. In Helen Frith Powell's book, "All You Need to Be Impossibly French" she explains how self-confidence is the key to a woman's attractiveness.

  • Remember the first rule of dressing well -- if you are showing some cleavage, wear that top with some trouser pants. If you're legs are traffic-stopping, pair that skirt with a flattering top that covers your chest. Balance it out. You're interesting when there's something left to the imagination.

  • Wear the right size. It's no secret that models and celebrities toting fashions are thin. You can be just as attractive in a size 14 as a size 2 if you wear it right. Make sure that your jeans waistband is not cutting into your hips. Don't be afraid to wear a larger size. If you look good, you will feel good. On that note, don't be afraid to wear a smaller size if you're prone to hanging out in baggy clothes.

  • Pair your favorite jeans with a T-shirt and a tailored jacket. This look transcends age. You can wear this outfit with ballet flats or a sexy pair of heels. This look will go almost anywhere.

  • Select skirts and trousers that accentuate your positives. If your thighs feel a little bigger than you're comfortable with, pick a knee-length skirt that has a bit of flare at the ends. Pair that with a hip-length top and a cardigan or a vest.

  • Shop for classics instead of trends. While it's fun to have a trendy piece, having a closet full of classic wardrobe staples will make it easier to dress well. Use trends as an accessory rather than your overall wardrobe. Classics include solid-colored pieces such as a skirt, dark jeans, a cardigan, a blazer or jacket, a white button-up blouse and a black dress that can go from day to night.

  • Don't hide your femininity. A woman who is comfortable looking like a woman is attractive. Hiding inside a baggy sweatshirt may be comfy for a weekend in, but allowing yourself to wear a skirt to the grocery store instead of pants may just help boost your womanly self-confidence.

  • Take care of your skin and hair. For those who are required to follow an extremely modest dress code, such as for a private college, having well-kept skin and hair may be all you can show the world.

  • Keep the make-up light. The point of make-up is to accentuate the beauty you already have, not give yourself a new face. If your make-up brushes off easily onto your collar, you're wearing too much. Find a feature you love about yourself and play it up a bit, leaving the others be. Put a little mascara and shadow on your eyes and pair with a natural lip, or play up your lips and keep the eyes simple.
