How to Steam a Live Lobster

Steaming lobster is one of the easiest ways to cook live lobster and certainly the healthiest way to cook lobster!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large Covered Stock Pot
  • Mesh Insert or Steamer Insert
  • Live Lobster
  1. Step 1

Pour water into the bottom of your pot about 2 inches thick. Do not salt the water since lobster should already have a salt water within its cavity.

  2. Step 2

Put in the strainer, but be sure that your strainer can accommodate your live lobster. Some call this type of stock pot a lobster pot but basically it is a very large stock pot with a strainer type insert.

  3. Step 3

Set the water to boil on high heat.

  4. Step 4

Add your live lobster with their rubber bands still on. Do not take the rubber bands off the lobster or you will get snapped! If your pot is big enough, you can add more than one lobster to your pot. You don't have to worry about crowding them.

  5. Step 5

Cook the lobster until they turn red all over. That should take about 15 minutes for a 1.5 pound lobster but it may take longer depending on the weight of the lobster. The color will be your guide. If you hear a whistling sound from the pot, that is the sound of moister escaping the lobster, not the sound of your lobster screaming as some will say.

  6. Step 6

Remove your lobster with long tongs and cut off the rubber bands from the lobster claws.

  7. Step 7

Serve your lobster with whatever you like! In the North East it is common to serve it with melted butter on the side but some are serving it with lemon juice or lemon wedges.

  8. Step 8

You will need lobster crackers or nut crackers to crack the shells. I highly recommend buying a lobster set that comes with a very long fork to reach inside those hard to reach places if you don't already own a set.
