The mainstay of many an Edwardian home, Boston ferns are experiencing a surge in popularity today. The beautiful green fronds, large size and ease of care make Boston ferns a favorite among houseplants. Using a fertilizer on a regular basis will encourage the fern's growth and continued health.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boston fern
  • Water
  • Water-soluble fertilizer
  • Plentiful indirect sunlight
  1. Step 1

Choose your fertilizer wisely. Ferns do best with a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. The fertilizer should be a balanced 10-10-10 formula, meaning at least 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus and 10% potassium/potash, all essential nutrients for plant growth.

  2. Step 2

Mix the fertilizer with water at half the strength recommended on the package.

  3. Step 3

Opinions vary as to the ideal frequency for fertilizing the fern. Most agree that fertilizing once or twice per month during warm months--April to September--will encourage new fronds.

  4. Step 4

It is not necessary to fertilize during colder months because the fern's growing cycle is dormant.

  5. Step 5

Boston ferns are a tropical species that love humidity and frequent watering, even without the use of fertilizer. Water the fern whenever the soil feels dry, and make sure its pot has adequate drainage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Assist the fern's growth by misting the plant with a spray bottle several times a week.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing by diluting the fertilizer to half-strength.
