Step 1
You might want to start by cleaning the exterior of your washing machine. Chances are, there are a lot of mold and mildew accumulating in the bottom part of your washer. Use a gentle all-purpose cleaner (such as those mild cleansers you use for your counter) or you can just use a good dishwashing liquid to remove the dirt and grime. Wipe it with a dry towel and then polish it up using an appliance wax.

Step 2
Run an empty hot water cycle and mix some vinegar in it. This should help soften some of the minerals and the grime that has collected on the walls of your washer. Drain it properly.
-
Step 3
Using a gentle-bristled brush or a dry towel, scrub the mold that is clinging to the walls of your tub. These are actually the main culprits as to why your washer does not smell as pleasant as it should be. Also remove the accumulated detergents or the lint trapped in the lint filter. The goal here is to make it look almost as new as when you have first used it.

Step 4
Run an empty hot water cycle again. You can try adding store-bought washing machine perfume or cleaner to further get rid of the smell.
-
Step 5
Dry the inside with a towel and leave the door open to let the sun and the air dry the inside of your washer.
